During the Spanish colonial era, Jose Rizal's advocacy for Filipino rights and independence during this time was his greatest contribution to society as a national hero. His works, especially the novels "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo," revealed the wrongdoings and excesses committed during the Spanish colonial era, fostering a sense of patriotism and igniting the Filipino people's desire for independence. The Philippines' struggle for independence was greatly influenced by Rizal's legacy, which also has an ongoing effect on the country's historical and cultural awareness.
But more than just highlighting the bad, Rizal's greatest contribution was illuminating the path to a brighter future. In order for the Philippines to stand on its own two feet, he favored nonviolent reform, and equality. He believed in the strength of a people that knew the worth of themselves and the force of unity. Though the Philippine Revolution was inspired by his beliefs and thoughts, his life was tragically cut short when he was executed by the Spanish. His execution, albeit unjust, came to symbolize the perseverance of the Filipino people in their unrelenting pursuit of independence.
